The Farmer’s Joy

english

Joseph Pimentel (2012)

duple minor longways

Adam Broome 6/8 A major 2004 BIII p. 56

Choreography

  • (1-8) 1st corners set forward, turn single R, two hand turn
  • (1-8) 2nd corners, the same
  • (1-2) 1s lead down the center

  • (5-6) 1s cross up through 2s to original places
  • (7-8) 1s cast down while 2s move up
  • (1-4) Star R
  • (5-8) Star L

Teaching Notes

Pimentel:

This is a simple dance which works well for new dancers, and the tune is so wonderfully joyful that everyone seems to enjoy it.

B1. I like each figure to fit two bar phrases, and for all four figures to feel like one fluid movement. Though I do not often use the words “gate” and “half figure eight,” I think newer dancers begin to get the feel for those figures here without even knowing it. That is intentional.

B2. Encourage intermediate dancers to start the star L on their right foot, so the new first corners have a nice transition into the setting at the top of

  • (1-4) Partners siding over by left to partner’s place, then turn single R
  • (5-8) Partners back to back
  • (1-4) 1st diagonals dance a chevron, passing R while 2nd corners wait then cast right into neighbor’s place

  • all take inside hands with neighbor to end progressed
  • (1-4) Fall back a double, then lead forward
  • (5-8) Partners two hand turn, then fall back

Background

Bell:

No special meaning to the title. It’s simply a nod to Daphne DuMaurier’s 1963 novel, The Glassblowers, which I was reading when this dance came to me.

Teaching Notes

Kevra:

A1. This is the first half of Cecil Sharp (swirly) siding: partners cross in an arc passing L curling in to face each other, then turn single R, ending across from home.

A2. Chevron: 1st corners cross passing R shoulder and face straight out, then fall straight back across the set into neighbor’s place. Because the entire A1 is danced with one’s partner, remind dancers to look for new neighbors for the chevrons in the A2. Instruct those waiting out to join in by facing their partner.

  • (17-18) 1s cast, 2s lead up (4)

Background

Friendly:

Harris Lapiroff won a tune/dance from Jacob and me in an auction at Harmony of Song & Dance. Harris is on the Pinewoods Camp board and requested a dance to build new traditions at Pinewoods in honor of the renaming of the two main dance pavilions. He wanted something relatively accessible that was elegant and graceful. The A part of Jacob’s tune reminds me a bit of the tune used for Abbot’s Bromley in the US, hence the balance back and forward in A2.

Teaching Notes

Friendly:

Between A1 and A2: in the transition from the star (A1) to the balance back (A2) keep hands briefly to face diagonal

In A2: the balance back and forward is step back with right, close (or step slightly back) left, step forward with right, close (or step slightly forward) left in preparation to turn single left

Between A2 and B: in the transition from the star (A2) to the double figure 8 for the 1s, #1 left-side dancer ease out of star and go down outside without extra cast; #1 right-side dancer cast into it

Between the end of B and the repeat: for 2s from the end (leading up) to the beginning, release early so you are out at the sidelines ready to set forward to diagonal

  • Original 1st corners at home, partner beside them
  • (1-4) Circle L ¾ (8)
  • (5-8) Giving 2 hands on the side: neighbors balance, two hand turn ½, opening up to face partner across (8)
  • All home
  • (1-2) Neigbors fall back a double, with hands (4)
  • (3-4) Lead forward, dropping hands, cross passing partner R, flip R to face in (4)
  • (5-6) Neighbors fall back a double, with hands (4)
  • (7-8) Lead forward, dropping hands, cross passing partner R, flip R to face in (4)
  • All still home
  • (1-4) 2 changes of rights and lefts, with hands (PR, NL)
  • (5-6) Giving 2 hands across: partners balance F&B, two hand turn ½
  • All progressed

Teaching Notes

Kevra:

B1 (3-4) After passing R with partner, turn immediately over R shoulder to face again and rejoin hands with neighbor. The movement should be precise and energetic: a quick flip to face partner while maintaining eye contact throughout, even as you take hands with your neighbor to fall back again.

B1 (7-8) Don’t fall back too far!

Originally notated improper, the corner positions feel different in A1 (who is leading the pousette)

Money Musk

Traditional (1785)

triple minor longways

Daniel Dow 4/4 A major 1776 NIB · Sheet music ↗

Choreography

  • (1-4) 1s allemande R 1 ½
  • (5-6) 1s cast to 2nd place
  • (7-8) Lines of three at the side balance F&B
  • (1-8) 1s slow allemande R ¾
  • Back out into center place at the heads
  • (5-6) Lines of three across F&B
  • (7-8) 1s allemande ¾
  • (1-8) Top four full R&L thru (across and back)

Background

There is a version of the tune in Barnes. Don’t use it! It has a funky rhythm and is missing the C part.

Teaching Notes

C. Contemporarily the R&L thru is danced without hands for the pull by or courtesy turn. (Historically, this is questionable.)

  • (5-8) Neighbors left shoulder around across the set (12)
  • (1-2) Circle R ½ (6)
  • (3-4) Cast back one place over right shoulder (6)
  • (5-8) Partners right shoulder around across the set (12)
  • (All home)
  • Take hands four
  • (1-2) Set left and right with a crossover step (6)
  • (3-4) Balance in and out turning the ring halfway around (6)
  • (5-8) Repeat B1 1-4 (12)
  • (All home)
  • (1-4) Neighbors set and link (12)
  • (5-6) Partners balance F&B (6)
  • (7-8) Partners two hand turn (6)

Teaching Notes

Camus:

  • This dance uses a crossover setting step similar to (the West Coast interpretation of) Irish Lamentation. It’s the cross-step waltz basic: Dancers start by crossing their right foot over their left. Starting the whole dance with the R foot may help.
  • It’s nice to have a lot of space for this dance, both up and down the set and across.

The Collier’s Daughter

Young (1718) Interp. Graham Christian (2016)

duple minor longways

2/2 G minor BI p. 21

Choreography

  • (1-4) 1s cross, go below while 2s lead up
  • (5-8) 1s two hand turn (1s now crossed over)
  • (1-4) 1s cross, go below another couple, 2s stay there
  • (5-8) 1s two hand turn and open up facing up (all proper)
  • (1-2) 1s lead up (face orig N 2s)
  • (3-6) Circle left
  • (7-8) Turn single
  • (1-4) Circular hey (PR, NL, PR, NL)
  • (5-8) All two hand turn

Background

Also known as The Duke of Rutland’s Delight.

Teaching Notes

B1. There’s debate about which direction the turn single should go here. TS L feels more natural to most dancers coming out of the circle, but TS R leads better into the circular hey. Encourage TS R, but emphasize that dancers may choose their direction.
